Mathematics

At River View Primary and Nursery School, we strongly believe that Mathematics equips pupils with the uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world.  Our aim is to create an exciting and stimulating environment that uses a range of concrete resources to maximise teaching and learning.

We endeavour to make Mathematics learning fun by using:

  • Practical activities and games
  • Problem solving to challenge thinking
  • A variety of individual, paired, group and whole class learning and discussions
  • Purposeful practise where time is given to apply their learning

Maths - No Problem!

From Reception to Year 6, the children follow a scheme called 'Maths- No Problem!' which is a mastery approach built upon principles from Singapore. This programme was brought into the school in September 2022 as a way of moving towards a mastery approach.

Maths is our Superpower

We believe that every child has a Maths superpower here at River View but sometimes, they just need a little help to unlock it!

Every half term, teachers can nominate children to become 'Maths Superheroes'. Children are rewarded with a badge linked to their hero, certifcate and their picture gets to go onto the 'Maths Superhero' display in the assembly hall. Each hero has a special action which SLT love to act out weekly!

Maths Day

On Friday 24th November, something strange happened at River View... we all turned into pirates for the day! Even more strange was that a pirate arrived at our school from the Carribean - he was called Captain Morgan!

The day began with an assembly where Captain Morgan told us that he had some maths quests for us to complete, either with him or in our houses!

After assembly, we went into our houses and completed maths quests on time, money, capacity and place value. The treasure hunt for odds and evens was very popular as was the capacity challenge - it involved water!

During the workshop with Captain Morgan, parents were invited to join their children in their hosues. It was great to welcome so many parents through the door - we had well over 150 parents throughout the day see Maths in our school.

A lot of fun was had during River View's 2023 Maths day - arggh me hearties!

Hedgehogs smashed the challenges and had a super day!
