Autumn 1 - Doodlers

In Year 5, the children will be looking to design and manufacture their very own “Doodler” in Design and Technology this half-term.

To begin this unit of learning, the children revisited prior learning about circuits. The children had great fun investigating and building their own series circuits, whilst also looking at the significance of the motor. After this, the children conducted motorised product analysis of two different products.

This week the children explored the Doodlers and determined the factors that affected the products form and function. They thought about the target user for the Doodlers and the circuit component used to generate the movement.

Working in groups the children took the Doodlers apart and rebuilt them, thinking about their configuration and how it could be altered to change its function. They identified and explored what functions could be changed and the impact these changes had on the Doodlers.

Spring 1: Gears and Pulleys

In Design and Technology, this week we have been looking at gears. We have learnt what a gear is and how they work. We had great fun constructing different types of gears using different materials.
