Today we investigated whether sounds could travel through different mediums to the ear. To test if sounds could travel through solids we put our ear and knocked on the table to test if we could hear it. We then tested if sounds could travel through gases by playing a drum near a bowl covered in cling film and rice. When we played the drum near the bowl, the rice moved on the cling film! This showed us that vibrations can travel through the air. Finally, we tested whether sounds could travel through liquids by hitting a tuning fork and putting it into water. This made the water vibrate.
Today we investigated how we could change the volume of a sound. On our tables, we had a variety of musical instruments and we varied the amount energy used to play them. We recorded the volume of each sound using a decibel meter. We then recorded this data in a table. Overall, we found out that loudness is the amount of energy in a sound. If we hit the drum hard the vibrations will be bigger and create a louder sound.
